This work references the site as the past home of the newspaper The Worker. The newspaper was originally based in Wagga, but in 1905 the production of the paper relocated to the new state of the art printing office at 129 Bathurst St Sydney.
Pressing Matters is based upon articles and pictures gleaned from The Worker newspaper. It wasn’t all Marxist rhetoric and male camaraderie, it also included a women’s section as well as a children’s corner. Very inclusive! Our selection of newspaper articles is a glimpse into the interests of readers who subscribed to The Worker.
Connecting the place’s history as the site of The Edinburgh Castle Hotel as well as Australian Workers Union office, these wall works contain imagery drawn from the pages of The Worker (seen opposite) that are rendered in Acrylic Gouache upon alcoholic beverage boxes.
These images sourced from The Worker Newspaper, which was printed on these premises in the mid-twentieth century are a peak into a bygone era: enigmatic and mysterious. Are the hopes and aspirations
of the workers of the past much different to our own?
